چکیده

Few articles on concentration of pepsin in the gastric juice of patients with disease of the stomach and duodenum are to be found in recent literature, and the results reported by different observers are not always in accord. We shall consider here only the concentration of pepsin in the gastric juice of persons suffering with the syndrome of peptic ulcer. Wilcox (5), in 1908, reported that the concentration of pepsin in the gastric juice of persons with peptic ulcer and hyperacidity was usually higher, and never lower, than normal. Boas (1), in 1925, and HirschMamroth and Rindfleisch (3) likewise found that the concentration of pepsin was elevated in the presence of ulcer, provided blood was not present in the sample examined, but they quoted other workers who at times failed to find any increase. Polland and Bloomfield (4) reported that the range of concentration of pepsin was the same in patients with ulcer as in normal persons. We have estimated the concentration of pepsin by a modification of the Gilman-Cowgill method (2), described in the preceding article (6). As an arbitrary standard of measurement a 1 per cent solution of Armour's 1: 10,000 commercial pepsin was assumed to contain 1,000 units. In the greater part of the investigation we examined gastric contents removed one hour after the ingestion of a test meal which consisted of eight arrowroot cookies and 400 cc. of water. We also determined the content of pepsin in the juice removed from the stomach in the morning, before breakfast. Although the same general conclusions may be drawn from studies of contents removed after a test meal and of juice from the fasting stomach, it is necessary to consider the results obtained with the two technics separately because of differences observed in the absolute values for pepsin. Duodenal ulcer The diagnosis of duodenal ulcer was made in 274 cases on the basis of the history and fluoroscopic examination. In fifty-seven cases the

Pepsin 1 secretion in chronic peptic ulceration.

In patients with peptic ulceration, both vagal stimulation by insulin hypoglycaemia and stimulation by pentagastrin cause pepsin 1 to be secreted into gastric juice. There is a secretory threshold for pepsin 1, below which only pepsins 3 and 5 are secreted. Pepsin 1 accounts for an increasing proportion of the total peptic activity/ml of gastric juice as the total activity increases. Higher con...

Antiulcer effects of Zataria multiflora Boiss. on indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer in rats

Objective: Zataria multiflora has been reported to have several medicinal properties including antioxidant, antibacterial, antispasmodic, and expectorant activities. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Z. multiflora hydro-alcoholic extract (ZMHE) on peptic ulcer caused by indomethacin in rats. Materials and Methods: ZMHE was prepared by maceration,  condensed by rotary evaporator and ...

Cigarette smoking, gastric acid secretion, and serum pepsinogen I concentrations in duodenal ulcer patients.

Cigarette smoking has been linked with duodenal ulcer disease although the mechanism of this association is unclear. This study assessed basal gastric secretory response to acute smoking of smokers with an active duodenal ulcer; in addition the possible effects of chronic smoking on gastric secretory capacity, as expressed by pentagastrin stimulated gastric acid secretion and fasting serum peps...

Acid, pepsin, and mucus secretion in patients with gastric and duodenal ulcer before and after colloidal bismuth subcitrate (De-Nol).

Basal and pentagastrin stimulated gastric secretion was measured in seven patients with duodenal, and six with gastric ulcers before and after four weeks' treatment with colloidal bismuth subcitrate (as De-Nol), one tablet four times a day. Each duodenal and all but one of the gastric ulcers healed. After De-Nol there were no significant changes in basal, or pentagastrin stimulated volume, acid...

Cigarette smoking, chronic peptic ulceration, and pepsin 1 secretion.

The relationship between the secretion of pepsin 1 (the most electronegative of the pepsins), and the smoking habits of 219 patients has been investigated. Significantly more cigarette smokers with peptic ulceration (72.5%) secreted pepsin 1 in greater than trace amounts after pentagastrin or histamine than did non-smokers with ulceration (51.2%). Differences of a similar order were found for m...
